FACT Bucks County has been working very hard in re-structuring our programs and to continue to grant funds to those in need.  A major part of our organization is specific to granting funds for educational purposes and in promotional assistance to other HIV service organizations.  We work with various local organizations to ensure that all aspects of our mission can be realized.  At a recent FACT board meeting, we voted to award Grants totaling over $12,000.00 to be distributed to HiTops (www.hitops.org ), Planned Parenthood of Bucks County (www.planitpa.org ), and Family Services Assoc. of Bucks County (www.fsabc.org ).  Each …

High Hopes as AIDS Conference Returns to U.S. at Long Last

[Article taken from Science Editor, originally by Anette Breindl]          In July, the International AIDS Conference occured on U.S. soil for the first time in more than two decades, the theme was “Turning the Tide Together.” That spirit contrasts sharply with the last meeting to take place in the U.S., which was held in San Francisco in 1990. “That was at one of the worst periods of this epidemic,” when an AIDS diagnosis was the equivalent of a certain death sentence, Paul Volberding, director of the AIDS Research Institute at the University of California at San Francisco, told reporters at …

CDC Trying Out Free AIDS Tests At Drugstores

Getting an AIDS test at the drugstore could become as common as a flu shot or blood pressure check, if a new pilot program takes off. The $1.2 million program will offer the free rapid HIV tests at pharmacies and in-store clinics in 24 cities and rural communities, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently announced. “We believe we can reach more people by making testing more accessible and reduce the stigma associated with HIV,” Dr. Kevin Fenton, who oversees the agency’s HIV prevention programs, said in a statement. The tests are already available at seven places, including Washington, …

News from Kevin J. Burns, Executive Director of ActionAIDS

For 26 years, ActionAIDS has been working to increase access to primary care and vital services for people living with HIV/AIDS. We, therefore, applaud the Supreme Court’s recent decision to uphold The Affordable Care Act. When fully implemented in 2014, the Affordable Care Act will increase access to health insurance to low income Americans and people with pre-existing conditions who do not have health insurance coverage through their employers. While the Affordable Care Act increases access to health insurance for uninsured and underinsured people living with HIV/AIDS, having insurance does not guarantee access to the wide range of services people living …
