Urbanity, Photographic
Essays by Jeffrey Apoian and Fred Stein
DATES: December 9, 2006 - January 15, 2007
RECEPTION: Saturday,
December 9,
2006, 6:00-9:00 PMA percentage of the proceeds
from the sale of Apoian's photographs will be
donated to FACT (Fighting Aids Continuously Together) Bucks County.
FACT is
a non-profit organization that provides direct emergency assistance
to
individuals affected by HIV/AIDS in Bucks, Hunterdon, and Mercer Counties.
Riverrun Gallery's new show, Urbanity, features the photography
of the two
renowned photographers Jeffrey Apoian and Fred Stein (+ 1967). Conceived as
two black and white essays, the show aims to reinvigorate flaneurism as a
contemporary urban aspect. Flaneur is a French word used by modernists to
describe a detached pedestrian observer of city streets. Both Apoian's
and
Stein's photographs depict urban landscapes of American and European
cities, and, even though the artists belong to different generations, they
share a visual vocabulary and a fascination with architectural structures.
Lambertville resident Jeffrey Apoian works out of his studio in Soho. He
discovered photography as a ten-year-old boy and has pursued it ever since.
Apoian considers the cityscape as his playground, reducing urban
architecture to its essence while escaping the trap of academic formalism.
The ephemeral, the unseen, and the under-recognized are his obsession.
Fred Stein's work deals primarily with remembrance. Having fled
Nazi
Germany first to Paris (1933) and then to New York (1941), Stein developed a
deeply humanistic interest in his redefined urban context. The prints
exhibited at Riverrun Gallery carry the specific weight of the political
uncertainty of the 1930s and 1940s.
Both photographers are astute social observers who work unobtrusively and
present their subject as the sole content. They both prefer natural or
minimal lighting and avoid elaborate set-ups as well as dramatic effects.
In photographing an urban landscape - form, perspective, and
tone are
needed to make a photo interesting. It really means interpreting the very
same ingredients that have been implemented by architects and designers.
